Food and Habits for Oily Skin

Does what you eat change how oily your skin is?

Nothing on a plate is proven to change oil production

We have not found good evidence that any particular food changes how oily skin is. The nearest findings come from acne research: biopsies in one lower-glycaemic-load diet trial showed smaller oil glands, and a probiotic meta-analysis found improved sebum measures. Both involved people with acne.

What we found

In a 10-week randomised trial in Korean patients with acne, a lower-glycaemic-load diet came with smaller oil glands on biopsy. In a meta-analysis of nine randomised trials of oral probiotics in acne, sebum content improved at 12 weeks. Neither study recruited people simply for having oily skin, so we do not turn them into advice for it.

What does more

A routine matched to your skin does more here than diet. Our scan scores oiliness by zone, and the ingredient pages for oily skin show what is worth trying and how to introduce it.

Questions people ask

Do greasy foods make your face greasy?

We did not find evidence that they do, and we are not going to guess. If you suspect a food, track it for a few weeks and look for your own pattern.
