Dairy and Acne: What the Studies Actually Show

Does dairy cause acne?

A consistent link, not proof of cause

Partly. Pooled observational studies find that people who drink more milk are more likely to have acne. That is an association, not proof that milk causes it, and the studies cannot tell you whether dropping dairy would help your skin.

What the pooled studies found

A 2018 meta-analysis pooled 14 observational studies covering 78,529 children, teenagers and young adults. The odds of having acne were about 25 per cent higher with any dairy, 28 per cent higher with any milk, 32 per cent higher with low-fat or skim milk, and 36 per cent higher with yogurt. Cheese was borderline. A second meta-analysis found the same direction for total milk, low-fat milk and skim milk.

In a French study of 24,452 adults, current acne was also linked to milk, though more weakly than to sugary drinks.

Why this is not proof

These studies compare people who drink different amounts of milk. People differ in many other ways, and some studies relied on memory of past diet. They show a pattern worth watching; they cannot show that milk caused the acne, or that stopping would help.

The link was at least as strong for skim and low-fat milk as for whole milk, so milk fat alone does not seem to explain it.

What to do with this

The evidence does not say you must give dairy up, and children and teenagers have real nutrition needs. If you suspect it, keep a simple note of how much you have and how your skin looks, for about a month, and see whether a pattern appears. Talk to a doctor or dietitian before dropping a food group.

What trials found about supplements

This reports study results only. It does not suggest taking anything or an amount, because the right choice depends on you. Talk to a doctor or pharmacist first, especially if you are pregnant or take other medicines.

Whey protein

Early research

Whey is made from milk, so people ask about it. A 6-month randomised trial in 49 men with acne found that adding whey protein was not worse than a non-whey drink for lesion counts or severity. It was a small trial in young men, so it does not rule out an effect in others.

Questions people ask

Is skim milk better than whole milk for acne?

Not on this evidence. In the pooled studies the link with skim and low-fat milk was at least as strong as with whole milk.

Will giving up dairy help my acne?

We cannot say. The studies found an association, which is different from showing that removing dairy improves skin. Track your own pattern before changing what you eat.
