Kojic Acid
Kojic acid fades dark spots by interrupting melanin production at the source. It's a reliable brightening ingredient, but it's also one of the few actives here with a hard conflict: never in the same routine as vitamin C, which destabilizes it.
How it works
A fungal metabolite that suppresses hyperpigmentation by chelating copper ions essential for active tyrosinase enzyme functioning. It alters the synthesis pathway of eumelanin to lighten stubborn epidermal dark patches, though it requires careful formulation due to its mild contact sensitization profile.
In practice, that melanin-blocking effect is gradual and cumulative — visible fading takes weeks of consistent use, not a single application.
How to introduce it
Wait about 5 minutes before the next step. Judging Kojic Acid before week 12 means judging it before it's had time to actually work — most of what reads as "this isn't doing anything" in the first couple of weeks is just too early to tell.
- Sunscreen is mandatory daily — pigmentation actives are undone by unprotected sun exposure.
- Kojic Acid specifically: do not combine with Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) in the same session.
Who should be careful
Kojic Acid is rated higher potency — that's exactly why it has a real ramp-up schedule above rather than a "just start using it" recommendation.
Don't combine with
Same-night use can irritate skin or cancel out the active — alternate nights instead of layering them together.
