Benzoyl Peroxide
Benzoyl peroxide kills the acne-causing bacteria C. acnes directly, which makes it one of the fastest-acting options for inflamed, active breakouts. It's also a genuine bleach — towels and pillowcases included — and it cannot be used the same night as a retinoid without deactivating it.
How it works
An organic peroxide that decomposes within the follicle to release free radical oxygen species, achieving rapid non-antibiotic bactericidal action against anaerobic Cutibacterium acnes. Its oxidative mechanism prevents antibiotic resistance development while inducing mild desquamation to expel follicular keratin plugs.
In practice, that bacterial kill is why inflamed, painful breakouts respond to it faster than to exfoliating acids alone.
How to introduce it
Wait about 15 minutes before the next step. Judging Benzoyl Peroxide before week 6 means judging it before it's had time to actually work — most of what reads as "this isn't doing anything" in the first couple of weeks is just too early to tell.
Possible purging window: weeks 1–3 — temporary increased breakouts as turnover speeds up, not a sign to stop. A purge shows up as small whiteheads in areas you already tend to break out, and settles down on its own within that window. That's different from a bad reaction, which shows up as redness, burning, or swelling in places you don't normally break out, doesn't improve with time, and is a reason to stop — see below.
- Can bleach towels, pillowcases, and colored fabric — use white linens on treated nights.
- Never combine with retinoids in the same session — alternate nights instead.
