Can You Mix Niacinamide and Salicylic Acid?
Yes.
Yes. They do different jobs on oily, acne-prone skin: salicylic acid clears debris from inside the pore, while niacinamide turns down oil production and calms redness. Plenty of acne serums already contain both.
Regulates oil, calms breakouts, and fades post-acne marks — a form of vitamin B3.
A BHA that dissolves oil and debris inside the pore itself — the go-to for blackheads and oily-skin acne.

Why they work together
Salicylic acid is oil-soluble, so it can work inside a clogged pore rather than only on the surface — which is also why it can leave skin feeling dry. Niacinamide approaches the same problem from the other end: it regulates how much oil is produced, reduces inflammation, and helps the skin make more of its own barrier lipids. That last part is useful here — it offsets some of the dryness an exfoliating acid causes, instead of adding to it.
How to use them together
- 1Cleanse and pat skin dry.
- 2Apply salicylic acid first — it's the thinner, lower-pH step.
- 3Wait before the next layer (see the table above for how long).
- 4Apply niacinamide.
- 5Finish with a moisturizer. In the morning, sunscreen goes last.
What to watch for
Niacinamide is fine daily, but salicylic acid still needs its own gradual introduction — pairing it with niacinamide doesn't make that optional. If skin starts stinging or peeling, cut back the salicylic acid nights before dropping niacinamide. Very high niacinamide strengths can cause redness in some people; around 2–5% is usually well tolerated.
Questions people ask
Salicylic acid first, then niacinamide. The exfoliating acid goes on clean skin, and the calming, barrier-supporting step follows it.
Niacinamide, yes. Salicylic acid should start a few nights a week and build up, so on the other nights use niacinamide on its own.
