Each trait corresponds directly to ingredients with peer-reviewed efficacy in scientific literature. Crucially, Skinzy does not claim capabilities outside its validated models. The scanner does not measure aging, structural laxity, or dark circles, as two-dimensional smartphone selfies lack reliable depth calibration for those metrics. Here is what our scanner measures well, what it measures poorly, and where it refuses to answer at all. #### Accuracy Is Not One Number Asking whether AI skin analysis is "accurate" treats five different measurements as one. In practice a photo-based scanner is far better at some traits than others, and the honest version of this answer separates them. Oiliness is the most reliable, because sebum produces specular reflectance - a direct, physical optical signal a camera records well. Dryness and acne are moderately reliable: both have visible texture signatures, though both are sensitive to lighting and resolution. Pigmentation is the weakest. It is measured from high-frequency variance in the LAB lightness channel, and that baseline varies strongly by facial zone - nostril creases, alar shadow and pore structure all register as variance without any pigment being present. Skinzy calibrates this per zone and attenuates the score when there is no chromatic support for it, because melanin is chromatic while shadow and sensor grain are not. Sensitivity and pigmentation are inferred from proxies, not measured directly. Treat them as directional, not diagnostic. #### Every Skinzy Scan Ships a Confidence Score Rather than presenting every reading as equally certain, each scan returns a calibrated confidence value between 0.40 and 0.95. Across our current corpus, real scans land between 0.710 and 0.811. That number is built from image quality, blur, cross-zone variance, per-detector reliability, and measurement coverage - the share of traits that were actually measurable rather than skipped. A low number is not a failure; it is the scanner declining to overstate what a particular photo could support. When average confidence drops below 0.50, all metrics are zeroed and the result becomes a maintenance-only routine. The system would rather recommend nothing than recommend something from a reading it does not trust. #### What the Scanner Refuses to Measure A zone covered by facial hair is reported as unmeasured for acne, not as clear. This is deliberate and it costs us coverage: many scans return no chin acne reading at all. The alternative - scoring whatever skin is visible between hairs - once let three follicles drive an entire routine. Skinzy also does not measure aging, wrinkles, fine lines, or skin firmness. Those are not weakly measured; they are not attempted. Any tool claiming to score them from a single selfie is extrapolating. Results are additionally capped during beta: acne cannot exceed 6 out of 10, pigmentation 7, and the overall composite 6. A scan cannot return an alarming number, by construction. #### Why a Single Scan Should Not Move Your Routine Photo conditions shift between scans - lighting, distance, time of day - and that noise is large enough to push a trait across a recommendation threshold on its own. On a single capture, the measured difference between the left and right cheek on the dryness axis averages 0.58 and reaches 1.25 at the 90th percentile. That is noise, not biology. Skinzy damps a single outlier reading against your recent scans, so a change only shows in full once a second scan corroborates it. Two scans of the same face on the same day return the same routine rather than two different ones. The practical implication: judge a trend across several scans, not one number on one day. #### The Limits We Cannot Yet Close Our calibration corpus is small and dominated by a few faces. Every adjustment made so far was validated by a user confirming they do not have a condition the scanner reported - a one-sided constraint that can only push scores down, never confirm the scanner separates one person from another. Our automated testing measures invariance, not accuracy: it confirms scores stay stable when exposure, gamma, colour temperature and noise are perturbed. That is the limit of what can be checked without ground-truth dermatologist-graded skin. An AI scan answers a narrower question: "what are the measurable optical properties of my facial skin right now, zone by zone, and which ingredient classes correspond to them?" It never establishes cause. A scanner cannot tell rosacea from contact dermatitis from seborrhoeic dermatitis, because all three can present as redness and the distinction lives in history and response to treatment - not in pixels. No photo-based tool can diagnose a skin condition. Anything presenting a scan result as a diagnosis is overstating what the method supports. #### Where a Scan Genuinely Wins Frequency. A dermatologist visit is a point sample, often months apart. A scan can be repeated weekly at no cost, which makes it far better suited to tracking whether something is improving. Regional detail. A scan scores five zones independently, so it can report that your T-zone is oily while your cheeks are dry - the single most common thing one-label skin quizzes get wrong. Consistency. The same measurement is applied the same way every time, without the day-to-day variation of subjective self-assessment in a bathroom mirror. Access. For most people the realistic alternative to a scan is not a dermatologist appointment - it is a guess based on a product advertisement. #### See a Dermatologist If Any of This Applies Painful, deep, or cystic lesions, or acne that scars. Scarring is not reversible by a routine and early treatment changes the outcome. A mole or lesion that is changing in size, shape, colour, or border, or one that bleeds or will not heal. Arriving with a dated series of per-zone measurements is more informative than trying to recall whether your skin was better in March. This is what the camera is checking while you hold still, in the same numbers the code uses. #### The Scanner Checks Before It Shoots, Not After Most photo-based tools accept whatever you upload and hope for the best. Skinzy runs the quality check in your browser, live, before the shutter is available at all — so there is no way to submit a frame the server would turn down. While the camera is open, a face landmarker runs on every frame and answers four questions: is your face large enough in the frame, is it turned too far, is it tilted too far up or down, and is anything covering it. If all four pass for eight consecutive frames, the photo is taken automatically. That eight-frame requirement is why it feels like a short pause rather than an instant snap. A single good frame can be luck — a blink, a flicker of light, a frame caught mid-turn. Eight in a row is a held position. If a frame fails, the counter drops back by three rather than resetting to zero, so one wobble does not send you back to the start. If nothing happens after about eight seconds, a manual shutter appears. It only becomes tappable once the frame would pass the same checks anyway. #### Framing: Fill More of the Frame Than You Think Your face has to occupy at least 15% of the frame by area. That is the single most common reason a scan will not fire, and it catches people out because a photo that looks fine to you is often taken at arm's length from a wide front camera. Fifteen percent by area is roughly the point where your face spans about two-fifths of the frame's width. In practice: bring the phone closer than feels natural, until your chin and hairline are near the top and bottom of the preview with a little room to spare. The reason the bar is that high is resolution per zone. The scan divides your face into five regions and tiles each one into patches; a small face in a large frame leaves too few pixels in the under-eye and chin zones to measure anything reliably. The server will accept a face as small as 5% of the frame, but the browser deliberately holds you to three times that, because a photo that barely passes produces a report full of low-confidence readings. #### Angle: Face the Camera, But Do Not Worry About Tilt Turning your head left or right (yaw) is limited to 20 degrees. Tipping it up or down (pitch) is limited to 22 degrees. Both are strict, and for the same reason: a turned or tipped face foreshortens one side, so a cheek that is angled away reads as a different size and a different brightness than the one facing the lens. That asymmetry would land in your scores as a real difference between your left and right cheek, when it is only geometry. Tilt — rolling your head sideways, ear toward shoulder — is treated completely differently. It is allowed up to 30 degrees, and it is not really a limit at all: the pipeline rotates the image and the landmark set together to straighten it before anything is measured. Roll is corrected, not rejected, because unlike yaw and pitch it does not change what the camera can see of your face. Only the extreme case is refused. The practical version: look straight at the lens, keep your chin level, and stop worrying about whether your head is perfectly upright. #### Obstruction: Hair, Hands, Glasses A second model runs alongside the landmarker and segments skin from everything else. It is the only thing that can tell that your fringe is across your forehead or your hand is resting on your chin, and capture stays blocked until it has loaded — the shutter is disabled and the stable-frame counter is held below the threshold rather than allowed to fill. Push hair back off your forehead and cheeks. Take off glasses. Nothing should sit between the camera and the skin being measured, because an obstructed zone does not produce a wrong score — it produces no score, and the report comes back with that region marked unmeasured. Facial hair is handled separately and deliberately. A beard or heavy stubble makes the chin and jaw zone unreadable for acne specifically, so that axis is marked unmeasured for that zone rather than guessed at. This is the intended trade: a handful of dark follicles read as lesions to a classifier, and three of them were once enough to drive an entire routine. #### Lighting: Even Beats Bright There is no minimum brightness you need to hit, and a window is better than a ring light. What matters is that the light reaches both sides of your face roughly equally. Side light is the problem case. A lamp or window to one side puts one cheek in shadow, and a shadowed cheek reads darker and lower-contrast than the lit one — which is exactly what a pigmentation or dryness measurement is sensitive to. Face the light source rather than standing beside it. The scoring is more robust to overall lighting than people expect. Measured across eleven faces under exposure, gamma and colour-temperature shifts, the oiliness reading moves by about 0.05 points on the 0–10 scale, sensitivity by 0.11 and the overall composite by 0.21. What lighting does not fix is grain: in a dark room your phone raises ISO, and heavy sensor noise is the one thing that can make the acne reading collapse entirely. Bright, even, indirect daylight avoids both. Shoot at the same time of day in the same spot if you plan to rescan. Consistency between photos matters more than the quality of any single one. #### A Short Checklist Face a window, or any soft light source, straight on. No lamp off to one side. Hair back, glasses off, nothing touching your face. Bare skin — no makeup, and ideally not straight after cleansing, which temporarily changes both oil and redness. Bring the phone closer than feels natural, until your face fills most of the preview. Look at the lens, chin level, and hold still for a moment. It fires on its own. **Why will the shutter not activate?** Almost always because your face is too small in the frame — it has to cover at least 15% of the frame by area. After that, the usual causes are turning your head more than 20 degrees to one side, tipping your chin more than 22 degrees up or down, or hair across your forehead. The on-screen prompt names whichever check is failing. **Do I need good lighting for a skin scan?** You need even lighting more than bright lighting. Face a window rather than standing beside one, so both cheeks get the same light. Across eleven test faces, changing exposure, gamma and colour temperature moved the overall score by about 0.21 points out of 10 — so ordinary lighting differences are tolerable. A dark room is the real problem, because the grain your phone adds at high ISO is what degrades the acne reading. **Can I use a mirror selfie or a photo I already have?** Skinzy captures through your camera rather than accepting an upload, so the quality gate can run before the photo exists. A mirror shot also puts glass, distance and usually side-lighting between you and the lens, all of which work against a measurement. **Should I wear makeup?** No. Makeup is designed to change exactly the surface properties the scan measures — it mattifies shine, covers redness and evens out pigmentation. Scan on bare skin, and wait a little after cleansing rather than photographing skin that has just been stripped. **Does it matter if my head is tilted?** Very little. Sideways tilt is corrected rather than rejected: the image and the facial landmarks are rotated together to straighten the face before measurement. Only a tilt beyond 30 degrees is refused. Lower is better, and a 2.4 is an ordinary, healthy result. #### Lower Is Better: These Are Severity Scores This is the single thing worth getting straight before anything else. Each score runs 0 to 10 and measures how much of a concern is present. Zero means the scan found none of it. Ten would mean the most severe reading the scale allows. So a report full of ones and twos is a good report. Across the faces this scanner has measured, overall scores cluster between roughly 1 and 3 — that band is normal skin, not a failing mark. If you have been conditioned by fitness and sleep apps to read a low number as bad, this will feel wrong for a moment. The overall figure is a weighted blend of the five traits rather than an average: oiliness and acne each contribute a quarter, dryness and pigmentation a fifth each, and sensitivity a tenth. It exists to rank zones against each other, not to grade your face. Scores are also capped during beta — acne and overall at 6, pigmentation at 7, the rest at 8. A capped reading is a deliberate refusal to report a number the scanner cannot stand behind, not a measurement ceiling you hit. #### The Five Zones Your face is divided into the T-zone (forehead and nose), the left cheek, the right cheek, the chin and jawline, and the under-eye area. Every pixel of measurable skin belongs to exactly one of them, with the lips and both eyes excluded. Left and right are the image's left and right, not yours. The cheek labelled "left" is the one on the left of the photo — which, because the camera faces you, is the cheek on your right side. This trips people up constantly when they are trying to match a reading to a spot they can feel. The zones are not equivalent to each other, and the scoring accounts for that. The T-zone has many times the density of oil glands that the cheeks do, and its skin sits over nostril creases and larger pores that make texture measurements read higher by default. Dryness and pigmentation are calibrated per zone for exactly this reason, so a T-zone reading of 2 and a cheek reading of 2 mean comparable things. Under-eye oiliness is always reported as zero. There are effectively no sebaceous glands there, so any oil the scan seemed to find would be light reflecting off thin skin. #### The Five Traits Oiliness measures surface sebum and shine. It is the most stable of the five and the one a single photo captures most reliably. Dryness measures surface texture irregularity associated with dehydration and flaking. Its baseline is strongly shaped by the geometry of each zone, so it is offset-corrected per region. Acne is measured differently from the rest. A heuristic pass finds candidate lesions, and every candidate crop is then classified by a dedicated model across four severity levels, whose result replaces the heuristic score entirely. If a zone is obscured by facial hair, acne there is reported as unmeasured rather than estimated. Pigmentation measures fine-grained variation in lightness, weighted by an estimate of your skin tone and attenuated when the variation shows no colour support — melanin is chromatic, whereas pores, shadow and sensor grain are not. It is the least reliable of the five, and we would rather say that here than let you over-read it. Sensitivity measures redness and visible irritation. It carries the smallest weight in the overall figure because a photograph captures it least well. #### The Confidence Number Every report carries a confidence value between 0.40 and 0.95. It is not a measure of how bad your skin is — it is a measure of how much the scanner trusts its own read of this particular photo. It is built from image quality and blur, how much the five zones disagree with each other, how reliable each detector was on this image, and what share of the axes could be measured at all rather than coming back unmeasured. A typical good scan lands around 0.71 to 0.81. When confidence drops far enough, the consequences are real rather than cosmetic: the recommendations fall back to a maintenance routine instead of introducing any active ingredient. The scanner is built to say "I am not sure" and act on it, which is the whole reason the number is shown to you rather than kept internal. #### Unmeasured Is Not Zero An axis marked unmeasured means the scan declined to produce a number, and that is different in kind from a score of 0. Zero is a measurement: the scanner looked and found none of that concern. Unmeasured means it could not look properly. The common cause is obstruction — hair across a zone, or facial hair over the chin and jawline making acne unreadable there. A consequence worth knowing: many scans have no chin acne reading at all, and that is the intended behaviour rather than a fault. Unmeasured axes also feed back into the confidence number, so a report with several of them will show lower confidence as well. #### Why Your Report May Differ From What You See The number shown to you is not always the raw measurement. From your second scan onward, a single unusual reading is damped against your recent history, so a one-off outlier shows only partially until a second scan confirms it. The raw value is what gets stored; the damped value is what gets displayed. This is deliberate. Photo-to-photo noise is real, and a scanner that swung your routine around on the strength of one grainy Tuesday photo would be worse than useless. If a change is genuine, it persists, and the second scan brings it through in full. It also means your first scan after a scoring-engine update is shown raw with no deltas, because it has no comparable history to damp against. **Is a high skin score good or bad?** Bad. Every score is a severity measurement from 0 to 10, so lower is better and 0 means the scan found none of that concern. Most healthy faces land between roughly 1 and 3 overall. **Why is my left cheek score different from my right?** Some asymmetry is genuine — sleeping side, sun exposure through a car window, how you hold your phone. Some of it is the photo: if the light came from one side, the shadowed cheek reads darker and lower-contrast. If the difference is small and swaps sides between scans, it is measurement noise. If it is consistent across several scans, it is probably real. Remember that the cheek labelled "left" is on the left of the image, which is the right side of your face. **What does the confidence score mean?** How much the scanner trusts its reading of that specific photo, on a 0.40 to 0.95 scale — not how healthy your skin is. It combines image quality, blur, how much the zones disagree, detector reliability and how many axes could be measured. Good scans usually sit around 0.71 to 0.81, and a low enough value makes the recommendations drop back to maintenance only. **Why does one of my zones say "unmeasured"?** Because the scan declined to guess. Usually something was covering that region — hair, a hand, or facial hair over the chin and jawline, which makes acne specifically unreadable there. Otherwise, the acne classifier works from lesion crops found in the photo, and a single small or flat mark in poor light may not survive that step. Here is how much they actually differ, measured rather than asserted. #### We Measured It Rather Than Guessing Any photo-based measurement has a noise floor, and a tool that will not tell you its own is asking you to read meaning into numbers that may not carry any. So we measured ours. The method: take a real face, apply controlled photometric perturbations to the same source image — exposure up and down, gamma up and down, colour temperature warmer and cooler, and additive sensor noise at three levels — and run every version through the full scoring pipeline. The skin has not changed at all. Any movement in the scores is the scanner reacting to the photo. Eleven faces, ten versions each. The figures below are the median across those faces, on the 0 to 10 severity scale. They are regenerated from the committed results file rather than written by hand, and they measure invariance — whether the same face scores the same under different conditions — not accuracy, which is a separate question a harness like this cannot answer. Every number on this page comes from that file. #### Re-lighting the Same Face Under exposure, gamma and colour-temperature shifts — the everyday differences between a window in the morning and a bathroom at night — the scores barely move. Oiliness shifts by about 0.05 points. Sensitivity by 0.11. Dryness by 0.16. The overall composite by 0.21. On a scale that runs to 10, and against a gate that only acts on a concern at 3.0, those are comfortably inside the noise. Pigmentation (0.52) and acne (0.76) are looser. That is consistent with what we already say publicly about pigmentation being the weakest of the five axes, and it is why pigmentation is attenuated when the variation it finds shows no colour support. #### The Case That Actually Breaks: Grain Sensor noise is a different story from lighting, and the honest version is worth stating plainly. Most axes handle it well — oiliness moves by 0.015 and sensitivity by 0.05, better than under lighting changes, because grain does not shift the average brightness of a region. Acne does not handle it. In the worst case across our set, the acne reading swung the entire width of the scale between the cleanest and the grainiest version of one face. The mechanism is specific: lesion candidates are found as local texture features, and once the whole image is grainy the extractor stops being able to tell a lesion apart from noise, so it finds nothing and the score falls toward zero. This is why a scan taken in a dark room is the least trustworthy kind, and why the practical advice on our capture guide leads with light rather than with framing. It is also the clearest single argument for the confidence number: the pipeline can tell when an image is degraded, and it would rather report low confidence and fall back to a maintenance routine than hand you a plan built on a reading like that. #### What the Scanner Does About It Three mechanisms, all of which exist because of the numbers above. Displayed scores are damped. From your second scan onward, a single outlier reading is pulled toward your recent history rather than shown at full strength. A genuine change persists into the next scan and comes through in full; a one-off does not. The raw value is always what gets stored, so nothing is lost — only the display is smoothed. Concerns have hysteresis. An ingredient is recommended for a concern once it crosses 3.0, and a concern that was active on your last scan is held active if it lands within 0.5 of that line. Without this, an axis reading 2.9 then 3.1 then 2.9 would add and remove an active ingredient from your routine on alternate days. A genuinely new concern still has to clear the full threshold. Routines are carried forward. If you rescan within 24 hours and nothing material has changed — no concern crossing the line, no shared concern moving more than 1.5 points — you keep the previous routine and its start date rather than being handed a fresh plan. A 12-week schedule that resets every time you take a photo is not a schedule. #### How to Get Comparable Scans Same place, same time of day, same light. Facing a window is the easiest repeatable setup most people have. Avoid scanning straight after cleansing, exercise or a hot shower — all three temporarily change both oil and redness, and none of them tell you anything about your baseline. Give a change time to be real. Barrier repair shows up over weeks and pigmentation over months; two scans a day apart are measuring the same skin twice, not measuring progress. Treat a single scan as one reading, not a verdict. The trend across several is the part that carries information. **Why did two scans on the same day give different scores?** Because the photos differed, even if your skin did not. Measured across eleven faces, re-lighting the same image moves the overall score by about 0.21 points out of 10, oiliness by 0.05 and sensitivity by 0.11. Angle and camera grain add more. This is why a single unusual reading is damped against your recent scans before it is shown, and why rescanning within 24 hours keeps your existing routine unless something material changed. **How much does lighting change a skin scan score?** Less than most people expect, for most traits. Across exposure, gamma and colour-temperature shifts on the same face, the median movement was 0.05 points for oiliness, 0.11 for sensitivity, 0.16 for dryness and 0.21 for the overall composite, on a 0 to 10 scale. Pigmentation at 0.52 and acne at 0.76 are the two looser axes. **Why is the acne score the least stable?** It depends on finding individual lesions in the image, and image grain destroys that. Under heavy simulated sensor noise the acne reading collapsed toward zero on our test faces, because the extractor can no longer separate a lesion from the noise. A well-lit photo is the fix; a dark room is the cause. **Does Skinzy hide the real score from me?** No. The raw measurement is what gets stored, and it is what your history and trends are built from. What is damped is the display of a single outlier, so one unusual photo does not appear to be a real change in your skin until a second scan supports it. **How often should I rescan?** Every two to four weeks is enough to see something real. Scanning daily mostly measures the noise described on this page — and rescanning within 24 hours deliberately keeps your existing routine anyway, so nothing is gained by it.
